Aarush Modali

Aerospace engineering student at Purdue University working on avionics, solid propulsion, and structures.

About

I’m an Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering student at Purdue. Before Purdue I founded South Brunswick Aerospace, a high school rocketry team that went on to nationals in the American Rocketry Challenge. My long-term goal is to build affordable, scalable systems for defense and space.

Projects

Purdue Space Program

IREC competition rocket

I work across structures, avionics, and propulsion on the team’s 2026 IREC rocket and was elected Systems Engineer for next year’s team. I helped develop the ESP32-based flight computer that drives the active fins, and I rewrote its flight software to replace Madgwick filters with custom C++ Kalman filters that adjust measurement noise for motor vibration.

Personal project

Rocket-boosted FPV drone

I’m designing a quadcopter that targets 200 mph using a rocket-boost first stage. The airframe is a 3D-printed PA6-CF structure with separate PETG-CF aerodynamic fairings, and the arms are straight fin panels with a symmetric NACA 0010 section. Avionics run on a Pixhawk 6C with a 4-in-1 ESC and an analog FPV camera.

Rotating detonation engine research

I’m part of PURPL’s work on rotating detonation engines, a propulsion concept that burns propellant in a continuous detonation wave instead of a steady flame.
